About this project

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is increasing in Burnaby based on public and individual efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Electric vehicles, whether a battery electric or plug-in hybrid electric, require plug-in charging to recharge the vehicle. While the preference is to charge the EV at home, not all residents can access or install the necessary charging infrastructure at home. Many residents may need -to recharge their EV battery when traveling about the city. Therefore, public EV charging provides an important service to support EV adoption across the community.

What's happening now

During summer 2024, we collected feedback from the community to understand transportation preferences, current EV use, future EV interest and public EV charging opportunities. Thank you to all who provided feedback.

Please review the What We Heard report below. The Burnaby Public Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy was approved by City Council in December 2024.

Guided by the Council-adopted policies, plans and strategies within Connecting Burnaby, Burnaby Transportation Plan and the City’s Climate Action Framework, the Public EV Charging Strategy supports the acceleration of EV adoption and emphasizes the City’s commitment towards climate action.

Through the Strategy, future public EV charging needs will be explored with an effort to optimize investments and partnerships to develop a reliable and equitable public charging network that meets the needs of Burnaby’s residents, businesses and commuters in 2035.
