What's happening now?

We’re excited to share the draft of Burnaby’s new long-range Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Plan—a vision shaped by feedback from residents, Host Nations, community groups, and Council over the past year. This plan will guide how we design and deliver public spaces and programs for the next 25 years.

Making Life Better builds on the strong foundation of services you already enjoy, while tackling the priorities you told us matter most:

  • Less crowding in parks and facilities
  • Better quality and upkeep of popular spaces
  • Keeping pace with Burnaby’s changing needs and interests

At its heart, Making Life Better is meant to enhance daily life for everyone who calls Burnaby home. The plan ensures future decisions shaping parks, recreation and culture services are made with the community’s well-being in mind. It also gives staff the tools to keep pace with change, work as a team, and track progress toward the community’s long-term goals.

Now we want your thoughts to help fine-tune the plan!

How was the plan created?

Over the past year, we gathered input from residents, Host Nations, community groups, and Council to understand what matters most for Burnaby’s parks, recreation and cultural spaces. This feedback shaped the draft plan and the values that will guide decisions for the next 25 years.

We also reviewed data, studied trends, and looked at how other cities are planning for the future. Together, these insights helped us build a plan that addresses today’s challenges, like crowded spaces and aging infrastructure, while preparing for Burnaby’s growth and changing needs.

About this project

Burnaby is a diverse and fast-growing city. The last long-range plan for parks, recreation and culture was created in 1984. With a changing population and evolving community needs, it’s time to create a new framework that reflects today’s realities and tomorrow’s opportunities.

This long-range plan will help the City deliver services that keep pace with change, work more effectively, and track progress toward long-term community goals. It will also guide how we create and maintain indoor and outdoor spaces, programs and experiences that enrich daily life and foster a strong, connected community.

The long-range plan will help us:

  • build and improve facilities and programs
  • ensure services are inclusive, accessible and sustainable
  • support the health and well-being of all Burnaby residents
