The civic heart of Lougheed Town Centre

Video overview

About this project

The City of Burnaby is replacing the Cameron Community Centre and Library with new facilities designed to better meet the needs of northeast Burnaby’s growing and changing population. The current rec centre and library, located at 9523 Cameron Street near Lougheed Mall, has provided a variety of recreation, social and learning programs to northeast residents for nearly 40 years. During that time, the surrounding area has grown and evolved, and the aging complex is no longer keeping up with the community’s needs and expectations.

The new Cameron complex promises to be a centrepiece of the community and will include:

  • new library
  • aquatic facility
  • gymnasium featuring two full-sized basketball courts
  • weight room and cardio facilities
  • indoor running track
  • fitness studios
  • multipurpose rooms
  • dedicated youth and seniors spaces
  • child minding and indoor and outdoor play areas
  • civic plaza

Completed engagements

Summer 2020

In 2020, northeast Burnaby residents had a chance to tell us what is important to them as we moved forward with a plan to replace the aging Cameron Community Centre and Library. The feedback received through an online survey that garnered 2,369 responses, along with a wider needs assessment study and four stakeholder discussion sessions, helped shape our plans for the new facility as we began schematic design.

Fall 2021

The schematic design of the proposed new Cameron Community Centre and Library were shared with the public in November 2021 through an online survey that generated 380 responses and two facilitated open houses. These open houses included a presentation on the schematic design and a question and answer session with consulting team members and City staff. Find out what we learned in the engagement findings report.
