What's happening now

The City of Burnaby is conducting a study to explore the possibility of a bike learning zone, a safe car-free space designed for children to practice biking and road safety skills. This feasibility study will help us understand community interest and guide Council’s decision on next steps.

We want to hear from you! Your feedback will play a key role in shaping this study and the future of biking in Burnaby.

About this project

Bike learning zones, also known as traffic gardens, have been used around the world for nearly a century to teach road safety and encourage active transportation. These mini street-like spaces help children practice skills like stopping, turning and navigating intersections in a safe, playful environment.

Burnaby’s Sumas Park and Poplar Park already feature small paved loops for young children (ages 2–6) learning to balance and ride. While these loops support early cycling skills, the City doesn’t currently offer formal learning programs in these spaces.

This feasibility study supports the City’s commitment to promote safe, active transportation and foster early education around road safety. It also aligns with key City’s initiatives, including Burnaby Transportation Plan and Climate Action Framework.
