About this project
The City of Burnaby is exploring the development of its first bike learning zone—a safe, car free space where children and families can practice cycling skills and learn the rules of the road in a fun, supportive environment. The facility may include features that mimic real world streets, such as stop signs, traffic lights and roundabouts, helping young riders build confidence before navigating urban areas. Visit Burnaby.ca/BikeZone for more project updates.
What's happening now
The City completed public engagement for the feasibility study in summer 2025. Based on public input and site evaluation, Council has approved 7679 18th Street as the location for the first bike learning zone and has directed staff to continue pursuing grant funding to advance design and construction.
The project is envisioned as a hybrid model: a year round, open access space for casual use, with the flexibility to host pop up educational sessions and partner delivered programming.
Partnerships with community organizations (e.g. nonprofits, cycling educators, youth groups) will be explored as the project advances, ensuring programming reflects community needs while keeping the space open and accessible year round.
This initiative aligns with the key strategic priorities, including the Burnaby Transportation Plan, Regional Greenways 2050 Plan, and the Climate Action Framework, by promoting safe, active transportation and early road safety education.
